Weather report is bleak
Well did I speak to soon!!?!? Rain, rain and more rain, it does not seem to want to stop.
We are still having fun though, playing tent shuffle where everyone who has a wet tent moves around to a dry tent. The winner is the one that ends up in a cabin because there are no more tents available!
Amazingly most people still have a smile on their face and are looking forward to a wet week or two.

So it begins
Camp has started and all is well so far. Service team are working well together and a few groups and individuals have arrived and are already having fun.
Bundeswehr arrived at 6:30 this morning !!?!?! Early start but feeling wide awake now after a few coffees.
Stormy weather but fairly warm and no rain (yet!).
Expedition
Expedition started a little damp but we have had a fun time. Thorrington has nothing as far as activities goes but we did a lot of things.
Making friendship and Hair Braids, spaghetti and marshmellow towers, animals out of wood and twigs to burn on the fire at night, football, cooking including making our own pizzas.
The International Feeling
What does it mean to be an "international camper", what does it do to you?
No one ever described it better than John Wiltshire in the following poem, as published in the camps "Clarion" (no1) in 1971
WHAT IS MY COUNTRY
What is my country?
They asked me,
and suddenly I realised
that I no longer knew.
That I couldn't even answer,
in any language,
in any place,
in any time.
For here I am,
a citizen of the world.

My first night at camp
I was a very naive 15 year old when I first came to camp. The camp rules were very strict. The first night almost became my last!
We arrived on friday night (Camp started on a Saturday in those days) and after we had given our passports and money to the bank, we got our camp ID, the camp rules and were assigned to a village. My first village was Brighton.
There were no activities for that night so we sat around in front of one of the tents, smoking and talking.
From one of the tent a Spanish boy asked if someone could bring him a cigarette... So I lit one, and brought it in to him.
At that exact moment the campers outside the tent spotted the camp boss Ken Harvey, accompanied by 2 strong guys and a fierce Alsatian doing there night watch round and heading straight for our village.
Boy, was I in trouble. Breaking 2 of the most important rules. There was no way to get out of the tent unseen. I would surely be sent home on the first boat back if they discovered me.
The boys in the tent covered me with blankets and luggage. I held my breath and they pretended sleeping while Ken and his men checked all the tents.
Of course they noticed one girl missing from the village, but their torches could not discover me under all the luggage in the boys tent fortunately......
